The Citizens League, in partnership with the Bush Foundation, is hosting a community workshop, Common Cents, at Delano City Hall Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. The event will be hosted by Delano Area Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs Committee. The topic will be balancing the state budget. The workshop will be presented free of charge. These workshops create a nonpartisan space where Minnesotans learn, share, and discuss the enormous state budget challenges. The workshops are fun, informative, and interactive. - The General Federated Women's Club of Delano is planning its annual snowflake Luncheon for Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Delano Legion, located at Highway 12 and Bridge Avenue in Delano. Social time is set for 11:30 a.m. with the luncheon to follow at noon. Entertainment and prizes will be provided. The GFWC invites first timers and returning guests to come to the luncheon. - The Delano Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the fifth annual Christmas tree lighting Friday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. at River’s Edge Park, on the corner of Bridge Avenue and River Street. Activities will include a visit from Santa Claus, carriage rides, caroling, and the lighting of the community Christmas tree. This event has been moved from Thanksgiving night as it has been in the past. Organizers of the event will be accepting donations of new or gently used coats, blankets, gloves, scarves, and non-perishable food items for Love INC and the Delano Helping Hands Food Shelf. - The General Federated Women's Club (GFWC) of Delano is seeking nominations for Delano Citizen of the Year. The presentation of the award will take place at the annual GFWC Spring Banquet Saturday, April 21, 2012. Organizers are looking for nominees from all groups, organizations, and individuals in the Delano area. The nominee need not be from the organization making the nomination. Art, music, shopping, and more are on the schedule during the Old-Fashioned Christmas scheduled in downtown Delano Saturday, Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Delano Area Council for Art javascript: save_and_close();and Culture is sponsoring the third annual event that features an art walk with more than 20 artists displaying and selling their work. The Delano Area Chamber of Commerce is teaming up with the Delano-Franklin Township Historical Society for the best fall celebration to date. The Fall Heritage Festival will take place Saturday, Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Delano. Organizers are seeking organizations, artists, farmers, crafters, businesses, or food vendors. The cost is $15 for a display booth, and $30 for a sales booth. Also, if you have a great chili recipe, you are encouraged to bring a crock pot of your specialty chili to the 2011 Fall Heritage Festival chili cook off. It’s free to sign up and the winner will receive $100 in Delano Dollars. After being judged, the chili will be sold for $2 per bowl. All of the proceeds will go to a local non-profit organization. - The Delano Film Society will be hosting a filmmaker panel Tuesday, July 19 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Three Crows Café and Coffeehouse. There will be three filmmakers who will answer questions about the filmmaking process and show examples of their work. Gwen Briesemeister, Delano Public School’s teacher of the year, will be one of the participants. All are welcome to attend.
- A car wash sponsored by the Delano Royalty Organization will take place Saturday, July 16 in the parking lot of the Delano United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds raised will benefit the royalty organization.
- Great River Regional Library along with Pizza Ranch will will sponsor pizza in the park Thursday, July 14 with an evening of entertainment in the Delano Lions Park near the gazebo from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Relax with your family and enjoy some special entertainment. Slices of pizza will be available for a donation, along with free beverage and an icy treat. All proceeds from this event will go to the Delano Friends of the Library, servers for the evening. - A 16-inch diameter rocket will be launched in Delano Monday, July 4 as part of Delano’s Fourth of July celebration. “We are one of the few cities in the entire state that meet the location requirements to do this,” said Alex Roeser, the Fourth of July celebration committee chairman. “It’s going to be an amazing show.”

- All interested residents, businesses, and property owners are invited to an open house Tuesday, June 14, from 5 to 6:45 p.m. for a presentation of the draft Delano parks and trails plan. The open house is to solicit comments and suggestions on the plan. Later the same evening, the Delano Planning Commission will be reviewing the plan and holding a public hearing for public comment on the plan. The city asks people to attend if interested.
- An annual salad luncheon will be served at the Delano United Methodist Church, 3310 County Line Road, Tuesday, June 14. Serving will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the menu will include a variety of salads, bread sticks, bars, and beverages. Take out luncheons will be available.
- An annual pork chop dinner with pork chops grilled by members of the Delano Fire Department and served with all the trimmings and ice cream will be Thursday, June 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Delano Senior Center. The cost is $8 for one chop, and $10 for two chops. Music will be provided by Wally Pikal. Call the Delano Senior Center for a ride or for more information at (763) 972-0574.
- At Rieder Meat Market in Delano, not much has changed in 100 years, and that’s a good thing. “We do it the old-fashioned way,” owner Laurence “Bud” Rieder, Jr. said, pointing out his handwritten orders, steaks cut to customer preference, and a wooden desk in the corner that’s been around for at least 70 years.
- The third-annual River Street Jam with Butch Automatic will take place Saturday, June 4 from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. on River Street in front of Dave’s Town Club, between Bridge and Railroad avenues. Advance tickets to the River Street Jam cost $10 and are available at the St. Peter’s School office, Dave’s Town Club, Delano American Legion, Crow River State Bank, and State Bank of Delano. Tickets will cost $15 at the door. This is a fundraiser for St. Peter’s Catholic School.

The Delano Sons of the American Legion will be hosting a Mothers Day omelet breakfast Sunday, May 8 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The first 75 mothers will receive a rose bush in honor of Mothers Day. Omelets are made-to-order along with pork sausage, hash browns, toast, juice, milk, and coffee. Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children.
