    The Delano Lions are hosting a night of “world champion BBQ” as a benefit for Central Park improvements. Ribs and brisket from the local Shiggin’ and Grinnin’ Championship BBQ team will be part of the event, which will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, April 12 at the Delano American Legion. Music by Tunakanu will take place until midnight. There is a 250 ticket limit, and tickets are $25 in advance only.     Ending poverty in Minnesota will be explored at Light of Christ Lutheran Church, 3976 County Line Road S. in Delano, Sunday, Nov. 4 at 9:30 a.m. Admission is free. Mike Gregory, a representative of “A Minnesota Without Poverty,” will speak on the statewide movement begun in 2001, to end poverty in Minnesota by the year 2020. This is an ecumenical and interfaith initiative. According to the 2010 census, nearly 600,000 Minnesotans live below the poverty level. One in four women over the age of 16 live in poverty. The event is sponsored by the Peace & Justice Ministry of Light of Christ Lutheran Church in Delano.
  • The "biggest and prettiest" pumpkin contest is set for Saturday, Sept. 29 at Apple Jack Orchards from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Upper Midwest Giant Pumpkin Growers.   • Artists sought for library art show

    The Delano Public Library, Delano Friends of the Library, and Delano Art Guild are seeking artists to display art and fine craftwork in its 27th annual Art Show, which will take place throughout the library from Tuesday, Oct. 2 through Saturday, Oct. 27 during regular library hours. All artists in the community, both young and old, professional and amateur, are urged to bring in two of their finest works to display during the show. This exhibit does not include photos, quilts, or any fiber arts, since the library has other exhibits planned for those types of art. Artwork should be brought to the library no later than Friday, Sept. 28 during regular library hours. Artists should also fill out a display form. Artwork must be ready to hang, or to be placed in small, low bookstands, otherwise it will not be displayed. If pieces are very fragile, notify the library staff when dropping them off. All artwork should be picked up no later than Monday, Nov. 5.

Toast to Art is a fundraising event for the Delano Elementary Parents in Education (PIE).     The Delano Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the fifth annual Christmas tree lighting Friday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. at River’s Edge Park, on the corner of Bridge Avenue and River Street. Activities will include a visit from Santa Claus, carriage rides, caroling, and the lighting of the community Christmas tree. This event has been moved from Thanksgiving night as it has been in the past. The haunted house insane asylum will be open Thursday, Oct. 18 from 6-9 p.m., Friday, Oct. 19 from 6-10 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 20 from 6-10 p.m., Friday, Oct. 26 from 6-10 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 27 from 6-10 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 28 from 4-9 p.m. (4-6 p.m. is kid-friendly).

  • The Delano Area Chamber of Commerce is teaming up with the Delano-Franklin Township Historical Society for the best fall celebration to date. The Fall Heritage Festival will take place Saturday, Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Delano. Organizers are seeking organizations, artists, farmers, crafters, businesses, or food vendors. The cost is $15 for a display booth, and $30 for a sales booth. Also, if you have a great chili recipe, you are encouraged to bring a crock pot of your specialty chili to the 2011 Fall Heritage Festival chili cook off. It’s free to sign up and the winner will receive $100 in Delano Dollars. After being judged, the chili will be sold for $2 per bowl. All of the proceeds will go to a local non-profit organization.     Delano’s annual garage sale days will be Thursday, Aug. 18 through Saturday, Aug. 20. Subscribers to the Delano Herald Journal may place a garage sale ad for free in the Monday, Aug. 15 edition of the newspaper. The cost for non-subscribers is $20, or a subscription to the newspaper can be purchased for $35 and a free garage sale ad will be provided. The deadline to place ads is Tuesday, Aug. 9 at noon.     Residents in the Delano area are looking forward to the upcoming growing season. It’s not that far off, really. Through the cooperation of The Big Woods Garden Club, City of Delano, and local businesses, the Delano Area Community Garden was founded in 2009. Participants will receive a 10-foot-by-20-foot plowed garden plot with aged manure and a water tank. The cost is $15 per plot, and limit is one plot per family. Participants will be required to attend a one-hour educational seminar, explaining the rules of the Delano Area Community Garden. At the educational seminar, registered gardeners will hear from a Wright County Master Gardener. In addition, city park rules must be followed and will be explained. Registration will continue through Friday, May 6. A garden work day is scheduled for Friday, May 20, with the opening of the garden scheduled for Saturday, May 21, weather/flooding permitting. Anyone interested in starting their own plot is encouraged to contact the Delano Area Community Garden Committee at garden@delano.mn.us for further details and an application.
