The Delano Lions are hosting a night of “world champion BBQ” as a benefit for Central Park improvements. Ribs and brisket from the local Shiggin’ and Grinnin’ Championship BBQ team will be part of the event, which will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, April 12 at the Delano American Legion. Music by Tunakanu will take place until midnight. There is a 250 ticket limit, and tickets are $25 in advance only. - When 2009 Delano High School graduate Jakob Lawman signed up for a three-month study abroad program, he never expected to see the picking of the 266th pope.“It was absolutely by chance that we were there during the election,” said Lawman, who has been studying in Antwerp, Belgium with eight fellow architecture students from North Dakota State University since Jan. 23.The group traveled to Italy mid-March, a short spring break excursion they had planned months before 85-year-old Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation due to advanced age.“When we heard the pope had resigned, we thought we might be there during that time, but didn’t think we’d get to see the actual election; it usually takes longer than two days,”
- After being crowned Feb. 24, Crofutt is now eligible to compete for Miss South Dakota in June. If she wins, she’ll be in the running for Miss America. “Being Miss SDSU has been an unbelievable experience so far. I love attending South Dakota State University and being a Jackrabbit,” said Crofutt, a 2010 Delano High School graduate. Crofutt’s decision to run for Miss SDSU came after a friend encouraged her to consider it. “I went into it to enjoy every aspect of the experience and have fun with it,” Crofutt said. “The best part was getting to meet the other girls in the pageant.”

- Snow season parking in Delano went into effect Nov. 1, and continues through April 1, 2013. No vehicles can be parked on any street, avenue, or alley between the hours of 2 and 7 a.m. This is regulated by city ordinance and enforced by the Wright County Sheriff’s Office.
- Ending poverty in Minnesota will be explored at Light of Christ Lutheran Church, 3976 County Line Road S. in Delano, Sunday, Nov. 4 at 9:30 a.m. Admission is free. Mike Gregory, a representative of “A Minnesota Without Poverty,” will speak on the statewide movement begun in 2001, to end poverty in Minnesota by the year 2020. This is an ecumenical and interfaith initiative. According to the 2010 census, nearly 600,000 Minnesotans live below the poverty level. One in four women over the age of 16 live in poverty. The event is sponsored by the Peace & Justice Ministry of Light of Christ Lutheran Church in Delano.

The "biggest and prettiest" pumpkin contest is set for Saturday, Sept. 29 at Apple Jack Orchards from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Upper Midwest Giant Pumpkin Growers. A weigh-off is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to noon. There is no cost to enter, and cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded. All are welcome to participate. Set up is at 10:30 a.m.

- The Delano Public Library, Delano Friends of the Library, and Delano Art Guild are seeking artists to display art and fine craftwork in its 27th annual Art Show, which will take place throughout the library from Tuesday, Oct. 2 through Saturday, Oct. 27 during regular library hours. All artists in the community, both young and old, professional and amateur, are urged to bring in two of their finest works to display during the show. This exhibit does not include photos, quilts, or any fiber arts, since the library has other exhibits planned for those types of art. Artwork should be brought to the library no later than Friday, Sept. 28 during regular library hours. Artists should also fill out a display form. Artwork must be ready to hang, or to be placed in small, low bookstands, otherwise it will not be displayed. If pieces are very fragile, notify the library staff when dropping them off. All artwork should be picked up no later than Monday, Nov. 5.

Fall Heritage Festival is coming up Sept. 22, sponsored by the Delano Area Chamber of Commerce and the Delano-Franklin Township Historical Society. The Fall Harvest Festival will take over downtown Delano Saturday, Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Stop by to enjoy a bowl of chili, entertainment, live theater, numerous children’s activities, hay bale maze, and a pie-eating contest. Also, if you have a great chili recipe, you are encouraged to bring a crock pot of your specialty chili to the 2012 Fall Heritage Festival chili cook off. It’s free to sign up, and the winner will receive $100 in Delano Dollars. After being judged, the chili will be sold for $2 per bowl. All of the proceeds will go to a local non-profit organization.
The Delano Area Chamber of Commerce is also sponsoring a medallion hunt, with a prize package valued at more than $500.

Experience an evening on Broadway right in the heart of Delano. The Fall Heritage Festival will take place Saturday, Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Delano. Organizers are seeking organizations, artists, farmers, crafters, businesses, or food vendors. The cost is $15 for a display booth, and $30 for a sales booth. Also, if you have a great chili recipe, you are encouraged to bring a crock pot of your specialty chili to the 2011 Fall Heritage Festival chili cook off. It’s free to sign up and the winner will receive $100 in Delano Dollars. After being judged, the chili will be sold for $2 per bowl. All of the proceeds will go to a local non-profit organization. - Delano’s annual garage sale days will be Thursday, Aug. 18 through Saturday, Aug. 20. Subscribers to the Delano Herald Journal may place a garage sale ad for free in the Monday, Aug. 15 edition of the newspaper. The cost for non-subscribers is $20, or a subscription to the newspaper can be purchased for $35 and a free garage sale ad will be provided. The deadline to place ads is Tuesday, Aug. 9 at noon. - The fourth annual Taste of Delano will take place Wednesday, Aug. 3 at Central Park from 5 to 8 p.m. and feature more than a dozen of the Delano area's restaurants providing plenty of food. Advance tickets are available and can be purchased through Aug. 1 at the Delano Area Chamber of Commerce office, Star West Chevrolet-Honda Sports, Crow River Bank, State Bank of Delano, Coborn's, and at the Delano City Hall. Advance tickets are $7 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under. Tickets the day of the event will be $10 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under.
- Where can people of all ages enjoy an evening of games, food, and friendship, while supporting a worthy cause? Look no further than the Relay for Life at Delano Central Park, which starts at 4:30 p.m. Friday, July 29 and ends at 5 a.m. Saturday, July 30.
- The Crossings Carnival will take place Saturday, July 23 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Delno Crossings, a retail strip center located in the northwest corner of Highway 12 and County Road 139 in Delano. The event will feature free Inflatafun rides, a giant slide, Tiger Belly Bouncer, free drawings, and live music. True Value Hardware, Fantastic Sam’s, Verizon Wireless, and Kickin’ Nutrition will be participating and offering specials. True Value Hardware Store will be hosting its Green Bag Sale Saturday, July 23 only. - The Delano Film Society will be hosting a filmmaker panel Tuesday, July 19 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Three Crows Café and Coffeehouse. There will be three filmmakers who will answer questions about the filmmaking process and show examples of their work. Gwen Briesemeister, Delano Public School’s teacher of the year, will be one of the participants. All are welcome to attend.
- A car wash sponsored by the Delano Royalty Organization will take place Saturday, July 16 in the parking lot of the Delano United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds raised will benefit the royalty organization.
- Great River Regional Library along with Pizza Ranch will will sponsor pizza in the park Thursday, July 14 with an evening of entertainment in the Delano Lions Park near the gazebo from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Relax with your family and enjoy some special entertainment. Slices of pizza will be available for a donation, along with free beverage and an icy treat. All proceeds from this event will go to the Delano Friends of the Library, servers for the evening. Everyone can participate.
- A 16-inch diameter rocket will be launched in Delano Monday, July 4 as part of Delano’s Fourth of July celebration. “We are one of the few cities in the entire state that meet the location requirements to do this,” said Alex Roeser, the Fourth of July celebration committee chairman. “It’s going to be an amazing show.”
- The Delano Area Chamber of Commerce/Fourth of July Celebration Committee is once again coordinating the advance sales of discount carnival ride tickets for Delano’s Fourth of July Celebration. The tickets are available now through Thursday, June 30 at the State Bank of Delano, Crow River Bank, Delano True Value, Coborn’s, Flippin Bill’s, Loopy’s Dollar Store, and Delano Floral and Gifts. - All interested residents, businesses, and property owners are invited to an open house Tuesday, June 14, from 5 to 6:45 p.m. for a presentation of the draft Delano parks and trails plan. The open house is to solicit comments and suggestions on the plan. Later the same evening, the Delano Planning Commission will be reviewing the plan and holding a public hearing for public comment on the plan. The city asks people to attend if interested.
- An annual salad luncheon will be served at the Delano United Methodist Church, 3310 County Line Road, Tuesday, June 14. Serving will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the menu will include a variety of salads, bread sticks, bars, and beverages. Take out luncheons will be available.
- An annual pork chop dinner with pork chops grilled by members of the Delano Fire Department and served with all the trimmings and ice cream will be Thursday, June 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Delano Senior Center. - At Rieder Meat Market in Delano, not much has changed in 100 years, and that’s a good thing. “We do it the old-fashioned way,” owner Laurence “Bud” Rieder, Jr. said, pointing out his handwritten orders, steaks cut to customer preference, and a wooden desk in the corner that’s been around for at least 70 years.
- The third-annual River Street Jam with Butch Automatic will take place Saturday, June 4 from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. on River Street in front of Dave’s Town Club, between Bridge and Railroad avenues. Advance tickets to the River Street Jam cost $10 and are available at the St. Peter’s School office, Dave’s Town Club, Delano American Legion, Crow River State Bank, and State Bank of Delano. - Residents in the Delano area are looking forward to the upcoming growing season. It’s not that far off, really. Through the cooperation of The Big Woods Garden Club, City of Delano, and local businesses, the Delano Area Community Garden was founded in 2009. Participants will receive a 10-foot-by-20-foot plowed garden plot with aged manure and a water tank. The cost is $15 per plot, and limit is one plot per family. Participants will be required to attend a one-hour educational seminar, explaining the rules of the Delano Area Community Garden. At the educational seminar, registered gardeners will hear from a Wright County Master Gardener. In addition, city park rules must be followed and will be explained. Registration will continue through Friday, May 6. A garden work day is scheduled for Friday, May 20, with the opening of the garden scheduled for Saturday, May 21, weather/flooding permitting. Anyone interested in starting their own plot is encouraged to contact the Delano Area Community Garden Committee at garden@delano.mn.us for further details and an application.

The Delano Sons of the American Legion will be hosting a Mothers Day omelet breakfast Sunday, May 8 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The first 75 mothers will receive a rose bush in honor of Mothers Day. Omelets are made-to-order along with pork sausage, hash browns, toast, juice, milk, and coffee. Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children. Proceeds to benefit the Delano American Legion baseball program.

Artists will exhibit and sell their works inside downtown businesses, and all other activities will take place in downtown Delano from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Delano Area Council for Arts and Culture welcomes the public to participate, and enjoy the artists’ creations.
